Four insulated conductors within one protected power assembly

A four-conductor feeder is not just a larger version of a three-core cable. 4 Conductor ACWU90 Aluminum Cable combines four individually insulated aluminum alloy power conductors with an additional bonding arrangement specified for the approved construction. The conductors use RW90 XLPE insulation beneath interlocked aluminum armour and a protective PVC jacket. This design may be considered where a distribution circuit requires three phase conductors and a neutral, subject to the electrical drawings. Scope

This specification covers three or four compact-stranded 8000 series aluminum alloy conductors with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation plus one bare aluminum alloy bonding conductor in multi-conductor cables. Conductor assembly is wrapped and enclosed in interlocked aluminum armour with flame retardant PVC jacket.Type ACWU90 cable is conforming to CSA C22.2 No. 51 standard .cUL file No.E544860.

Application

Type ACWU90 cables are primarily intended for exposed and concealed wiring in dry or wet locations and where exposed to the weather. For use in ventilated, non-ventilated, and ladder type cable trays in wet and dry locations; direct earth burial; service entrance above or below ground.

How should a neutral conductor be specified in four-conductor ACWU90?

A 4C ACWU90 feeder wiring design may use three insulated phase conductors and one insulated neutral where the engineered circuit requires it. The separate bonding conductor is not the neutral; verify the color identification, neutral sizing and supply drawings.

Does the bonding wire count as one of the four conductors?

The four insulated circuit conductors of 4 conductor ACWU90 bonding wire are distinct from any additional bare aluminum bonding wire. An order marked 4C should not count the bonding wire as a phase or neutral conductor.

Can ACWU90 be used in a single-phase feeder?

A ACWU90 single phase feeder configuration may be considered where the circuit design needs the insulated conductor arrangement, but not all four cores are necessarily required for single-phase service. Engineering must determine circuit assignment, protective bonding and code compliance.

Can ACWU90 serve a three-phase distribution circuit?

A correctly specified ACWU90 three phase cable assembly may serve a suitable three-phase feeder. Review neutral requirements, circuit protection and approved bonding before selection.
