What is the difference between PVC-jacketed MC cable and standard unjacketed MC cable, and can it really be directly buried?
The key difference is the integral PVC outer jacket, which adds superior corrosion resistance and moisture barrier protection. This version is UL 1569 certified for direct burial in earth and concrete encasement without any additional conduit or raceway. Standard unjacketed MC cable only works in dry/wet locations above ground and cannot be buried underground.
What is the ampacity of 2/0 AWG THHN/THWN-2 PVC-jacketed MC cable, and what circuit breaker should I use?
Per NEC 2023 Table 310.16, it has a 90°C base ampacity of 195A. For standard 75°C equipment terminations, the usable ampacity is 175A. For continuous loads running 3+ hours, follow the 80% load rule and use a 150A circuit breaker, which can safely power up to 90kW at 480V or 36kW at 120/240V.
Can this cable be used in fully exposed outdoor and corrosive environments?
Yes. The UV-stabilized PVC outer jacket provides excellent protection against sunlight degradation, rain, snow, and ice, making it suitable for fully exposed outdoor installations. It also resists mild chemical corrosion and is ideal for coastal salt spray areas, wastewater treatment plants, and industrial yards where unjacketed MC would quickly deteriorate.
What NEC requirements must be followed for direct burial installation of this cable?
Per NEC Article 330, the minimum burial depth is 24 inches (600mm) for direct burial in earth. This can be reduced to 18 inches (450mm) if covered by a 2-inch concrete slab. Always use approved underground MC cable fittings, backfill with clean, rock-free soil, and install a red warning tape 12 inches above the cable. No additional conduit is required.
