Salty coastal air, chemical plant corrosive fume, dusty enclosed tray space will cut its service life down to 12-15 years. Copper keeps stable service life under corrosive industrial working conditions.

Core lifespan & application limit: Aluminum VS Copper?

Copper: 30-50 years maintenance-free, mandatory for building entrance, fire circuit, critical load projects. Regular ACM aluminum: 10-15 years, only for temporary industrial tray lines. 750kcmil AA8000 aluminum alloy: 18-20 years with bi-metal lugs, only for open ventilated cable tray. Aluminum is banned for closed, unattended, life-safety power circuits.

AA8000 aluminum reaches 18-20 year service life, why still pick copper instead?

Lifespan is not the only judging standard, here are irreplaceable advantages of copper: 1.Connection stability: Aluminum expands/shrinks greatly with temperature change, terminal loosening and oxidation risk always exists, requires quarterly manual tightening maintenance; copper terminal connection stays stable without routine check. 2.Code restriction: Even long-life AA8000 aluminum is only approved for open ventilated cable tray; copper is permitted for all wiring spaces. 3.Load safety: Copper has 100% IACS conductivity, lower heat generation under full load; 750KCMIL aluminum only owns 61% conductivity, higher line heat loss. 4.Fault tolerance: Copper can withstand temporary overload surge; aluminum is easy to degrade once overloaded, even within its service life.

Under same 90℃ XHHW-2 insulation condition, 750KCMIL AA8000 aluminum ampacity equals roughly 470KCMIL copper wire. Contractors have to upgrade aluminum gauge to meet copper equivalent power load.
