With a 500 kcmil stranded copper conductor, this cable delivers approximately 380A at 75°C per NEC, making it an excellent choice for large motors, transformers, switchboards, and backup generator connections. Its aluminum interlocked armor (AIA) provides robust mechanical protection against crushing and impact while being significantly lighter than steel-armored alternatives, simplifying overhead tray installations, long vertical risers, and tight bending spaces. The dual-rated THHN/THWN-2 insulation ensures reliable operation in dry, damp, or wet locations, and the overall PVC jacket adds extra resistance to moisture, sunlight, and common industrial chemicals. Rated 600V and UL-certified as Type MC, this cable can be installed without conduit in many outdoor and exposed applications, reducing material and labor costs compared to traditional pipe-and-wire methods. Why would I choose the aluminum interlocked armor (AIA) version over steel armor for 500 kcmil cable?
The AIA is significantly lighter than steel armor – about 30–40% less weight. For a large 500 kcmil conductor, this makes a huge difference in handling, pulling, and supporting the cable, especially in long vertical risers or overhead cable trays. Workers can install it faster with less fatigue, and building structures see lower dead load.
Can I install this cable outdoors on a rooftop or between buildings without conduit?
Yes, as long as it is supported and protected from physical damage per NEC 330. The PVC jacket is UV-resistant and rated for sunlight exposure. The AIA provides good impact resistance. However, for rooftop installations, use appropriate supports to keep the cable above the roof surface and avoid standing water.
Is this cable suitable for vertical runs in a high-rise building?
Absolutely. The lightweight AIA is a major advantage for vertical risers. You must use appropriate cable supports (basket trays, cleats, or clamps) at intervals not exceeding NEC 330.30 spacing (typically every 6 feet for vertical runs). Also consider the weight of the copper conductors – but the AIA keeps total cable weight lower than steel-armored alternatives.
Can this 500 kcmil cable be directly buried underground?
No. The aluminum interlocked armor (AIA) is not rated for direct burial because aluminum is susceptible to corrosion in soil. However, the PVC jacket over the armor allows the cable to be installed in underground conduits, outdoor exposed runs, or wet locations. For direct burial, you would need a steel armor version or an MC cable specifically marked for direct burial.
