How do I calculate PV cable voltage drop?
Solar cable voltage drop is calculated from conductor resistance, current, circuit length and system voltage. Use the full positive-and-negative current path and compare the result with the project's allowable percentage rather than selecting size only from a generic amp chart. GERITEL WIRE can assist with OEM marking and packaging while keeping the electrical construction aligned with the approved product specification.
Is voltage drop more important on low-voltage off-grid systems?
Yes. The same voltage loss represents a larger percentage of a low-voltage system, so PV cable voltage drop can be especially important in 12V, 24V or 48V off-grid circuits. Battery-side wiring usually needs a different, much larger cable size than PV string wiring. GERITEL WIRE can help confirm the requested standard, size, color and marking before quotation so the cable matches the project specification.
Can I oversize a solar cable?
Yes, an oversized solar cable can reduce voltage drop and provide design margin, provided the connector, gland, terminal and routing can accept the larger outside diameter. Oversizing should still be economically justified rather than done blindly. For project orders, GERITEL WIRE can support technical clarification, cable marking, reel or drum packaging and export documentation.
Can I use a smaller cable if the run is short?
A short route can reduce voltage-drop requirements, but solar cable sizing must also satisfy current capacity, temperature, fault protection, connector compatibility and local rules. Do not reduce the cable size based on length alone. GERITEL WIRE can review the buyer's voltage, route length, current and installation environment before recommending a suitable cable size.
