What Is The Difference Between THHN Wire And XHHW Wire

THHN and XHHW are both types of electrical wires that are commonly used in electrical installations. Although they may look similar, there are some differences between the two.

THHN wire stands for Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon coated wire. It is a type of wire that is composed of copper conductors, which are coated with a PVC insulation. THHN wires are rated for up to 90 degrees Celsius (194 degrees Fahrenheit) and are commonly used in dry locations.

XHHW wire stands for Cross-Linked High Heat-resistant Water-resistant wire. This wire is made with a thermoset insulation material that is capable of withstanding high temperatures (up to 90 degrees Celsius) and is water-resistant. XHHW wires are commonly used in both dry and wet locations, including underground installations.

In terms of flexibility, THHN wire is more flexible than XHHW wire due to its PVC insulation. However, XHHW wire is more durable and has a longer lifespan due to its thermoset insulation.

Ultimately, the choice between THHN and XHHW wire depends on the specific application and the conditions in which the wire will be used. Both wires are suitable for most electrical installations and are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
