1. What Is RHH Wire?
RHH wire is a single-conductor copper wire with high heat resistance, typically used in dry environments. "RHH" stands for "Rubber-insulated Heat-resistant wire, suitable for dry locations."
RHH wire is usually insulated with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), providing excellent electrical insulation and thermal stability, with a typical heat resistance of up to 90°C or higher. Commonly available sizes include rhh wire 1/0, 2/0 rhh, and 4/0 rhh wire, all widely used in high-current circuits and main power distribution systems.
2. Voltage Rating of RHH Wire
According to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and UL standards, the standard voltage rating of RHH wire is 600 volts (600V). This rating is sufficient for the vast majority of residential, commercial, and light industrial electrical systems.
Although RHH wire shares construction features with higher-rated cables like RHW-2 or USE-2 (which are rated at 1000V), RHH is specifically rated for 600V and should be used accordingly in dry and non-subterranean installations.
Even for larger wire sizes such as 2/0 rhh or 4/0 rhh wire, which can handle higher current, the voltage rating remains at 600V, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards.
3. Typical Applications of RHH Wire
Thanks to its superior insulation and heat resistance, RHH wire is widely used in the following applications:
Building wiring systems – RHH wire is used in residential and commercial construction, with rhh wire 1/0 being ideal for medium-load circuits.
Switchgear and control panels – Due to its flexibility and thermal tolerance, RHH wire is well-suited for internal equipment wiring.
Industrial power systems – In dry, high-temperature environments, 2/0 rhh and 4/0 rhh wire are commonly used in feeder and power distribution circuits.
Note: RHH wire is not suitable for wet or underground environments. For those scenarios, RHW or USE cable types should be considered.
4. Key Considerations When Choosing RHH Wire
When selecting RHH wire, in addition to voltage rating, the following factors must be considered:
Wire size vs. current load – For example, rhh wire 1/0 is suitable for mid-range systems, while 2/0 rhh and 4/0 rhh wire are better suited for high-power applications.
Environmental suitability – RHH is intended for dry locations only and should not be used underground or in wet conditions.
Temperature rating – RHH wire is rated for 90°C operation. However, consistent overheating must be avoided.
Always ensure the selected RHH wire meets NEC or UL compliance, enhancing system reliability and safety.
