The main difference between SWA cable and XLPE cable lies in their structure and purpose. ‌


SWA cable, also known as steel wire armoured cable, is characterized by having a steel wire armor layer, which is usually wrapped by double steel strips with gaps, enhancing the tensile performance of the cable and suitable for use in power and communication overhead lines and other occasions. The conductor working temperature of SWA cable is 70 ℃, while XLPE insulation is 90 ℃.


XLPE cable, also known as cross-linked polyethylene cable, is a type of cable that uses cross-linking process to transform polyethylene into a mesh structure, thereby improving the heat resistance and deformation resistance of the cable. This type of cable maintains its strength and toughness even at high temperatures, making it suitable for use in power grids, especially in situations where high voltage and high current transmission are required. The safe operation of XLPE cables is crucial for the stability of the power system, and common testing methods include withstand voltage testing, routine state assessment, and partial discharge detection (partial discharge detection). XLPE cables, due to their high rated current and short-circuit rating, as well as good availability, have replaced traditional PVC insulated cables and become the preferred choice for low and medium voltage industrial distribution circuits
