Can MC Cable Be Directly Buried Underground?

Leave a message

In the field of electrical engineering, metal clad cable (MC cables) are widely used in various building and industrial environments due to their durability, shielding performance, and ease of installation. However, further exploration is still needed regarding whether MC cables can be directly buried underground, especially for different types of MC cables such as jacketed MC cable, 103 MC wire, PVC coated MC cable, isolated ground MC cable, fire alarm MC cable, MC cable 8 3 and 8 2 metal clad cable, which have different applicable environments and installation requirements.

Basic Structure and Classification of MC Cable
MC cable is usually composed of conductor, insulation layer, metal armor layer, and outer sheath. Different types of MC cables use different outer sheath materials according to application requirements. For example:
Jacketed MC Cable: The outer layer is covered with an additional sheath, providing better mechanical protection and waterproof performance.
PVC Coated MC Cable: The outer PVC layer enhances corrosion resistance and moisture resistance, making it suitable for underground or humid environments.
Isolated Ground MC Cable: Used to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI), it is commonly used in hospitals, data centers, and other places.
Fire Alarm MC Cable: Meets fire safety requirements and is suitable for fire alarm systems.
MC Cable 8 3, MC Cable 8 2, and 10 3 MC Wire (different specifications of MC cables): represent the conductor size and number of core wires of the cable, respectively, and are suitable for electrical systems with different load requirements.

Applicability of buried MC cable
According to NEC (National Electrical Code) regulations, standard MC cables are not always suitable for direct buried applications. To determine whether MC cables can be directly buried underground, the following factors need to be considered:
1. Does it have a moisture-proof outer sheath
Although the metal coating of ordinary MC cables provides some mechanical protection, it does not have good moisture resistance and may be susceptible to moisture erosion if buried for a long time. Therefore, only MC cables with PVC coated MC cables or Jacketed MC cables can be directly buried underground, otherwise additional conduit protection is required.
2. Applicable NEC code requirements
NEC 330.10 stipulates that MC cables can be used for protected underground installations, but must meet the burial depth requirements of NEC 300.5. In addition, NEC 330.12 also lists places where the use of MC cables is prohibited, such as in extremely humid or chemically corrosive environments.
3. Mechanical protection requirements
Although the armor layer of MC cables provides some physical protection, they may still be damaged by factors such as rocks and soil settlement in underground environments. Using MC Cable with PVC Jacket can improve impact resistance and reduce the risk of mechanical damage.
4. Is additional catheter protection needed
In many cases, even if the MC cable itself has a sheath, it is still recommended to install it in a rigid metal conduit (RMC) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) conduit to provide additional protection for increased durability.

Applicability analysis of buried MC cable of different types

MC cable type Applicability for direct burial remarks
Jacketed MC Cable apply Equipped with an additional protective sheath to enhance moisture resistance
PVC Coated MC Cable apply Suitable for underground humid environments
Isolated Ground MC Cable Not Applicable Mainly used for EMI environmental protection
Fire Alarm MC Cable Not Applicable Designed for internal fire protection systems in buildings

Based on the above analysis, not all MC cable can be directly buried underground and must meet one of the following conditions:
Equipped with a waterproof sheath (such as PVC Coated MC Cable or Jacketed MC Cable), suitable for humid environments.
Installed inside the conduit to increase mechanical protection and prevent corrosion.
Complies with NEC standards to ensure the safety of buried installations.
For ordinary MC cables (without additional sheath), it is recommended to use conduits for buried installation to extend their service life and comply with electrical specifications. Therefore, in practical applications, selecting the appropriate type of MC cable and following NEC specifications are key to ensuring cable safety.
